Cliff May Hacienda-style in Exclusive Wooded Area

Cliff May created this signature home when the Spanish colonial revival architecture became one of the most popular styles in the Southwest. May loved open spaces and built built for the seclusion and comfort of their families for the enjoyment of relaxation in their homes. His approach called for houses to be built out, instead of up, with the constant goal of bringing the outdoors in.

A wooden gate set in an arched stucco wall capped with terracotta tiles signals the way into this hacienda with towering trees in a park-like setting. Once inside the gate, May had a 17,123 square foot lot in the Wooded Area, to establish a romantic stage from another time. Following the winding brick path through the lush garden, we catch glimpses of the 2,817 square foot hacienda with an authentic tile roof. This four bedroom, three bath “U-shaped” home gently embraces the courtyard with a calming fountain.

Ornate, wrought-iron lanterns flank the pair of entry doors. Across the corridor, the hacienda’s original front door now opens onto a newly designed spa and barbeque area. This double door exhibits a wonderful design that May favored.

The interior architecture contrasts smooth archways between rooms with strong, linear patterns of exposed painted beams to match the walls. The living room
with its sculptural fireplace, forms the hacienda’s cozy centerpiece. The living and dining room is flooded with natural light and multiple doors. The updated kitchen with Euro-stone counter tops, tile flooring, farmhouse copper sink, wolf stove with hood, exquisite cabinets with custom tile back splash, brings all the joy for cooking.

The updated master bedroom offers a sitting area to enjoy the double sided fireplace. His and her walk-in closets, and spacious custom tiled master bath are a welcome to this room. Every room looks out onto mature landscaping, several terraced patios or manicured lawn, connecting the house to the lush outdoors are a welcome addition to this room.

On the patio side, the house was originally buffered by a roofed corridor, that’s now enclosed. The large windows installed during a renovation are compatible with the house’s largest orignal windows, which frame 16 glass panels and almost run floor to ceiling. Both windows flood the interior with lots of sunlight.

This hacienda represents Cliff May’s passion to design homes that were in harmony with the way people wanted to live.
